Physiotherapy is an important part of the health care system. It strives to promote well-being and help clients to function independently in their lives and communities. A regulatory body governs Physiotherapy. The mission of this profession is to protect the client's interest by regulating and continually improving the practice of physiotherapists. Integral to this mission is the partnership between the client and the professional.
Therapists are trained to listen to clients and assess their problems, and use clinical decision making to prescribe appropriate treatment regimes. By using this service, clients are less likely to have long-term impairments, be off work for extended times, or be unsafe in their homes. Physiotherapists help the elderly to walk and to reduce the risk of falls. They help athletes to return to their sport, assist adults to return to work after injury, and work with clients to resume activities as they recover from disease, trauma, impairment, surgeries or neurological disorders.
| SHHA employs one full-time Physiotherapist and one full-time Physiotherapy Assistant. |
Areas of service include outpatients, acute inpatients, and rehabilitation patients.
The Department is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is closed weekends and public holidays. It is located in the basement of the Hospital, just to the right as you come off the elevator.
| Patients seen in the physiotherapy department must have a referral from a physician. | ![]() |
Outpatients must present their Ontario Health Card at the front desk prior to their first visit. If the Workers’ Compensation Board is covering your injury, please bring your W.S.I.B. claim number. Since 45-60 minutes is usually reserved for your first assessment, it is imperative that you contact us if you are unable to attend. The Physiotherapy Department requires at least 3 hours notice for change in appointment schedule or cancellation.
As SHHA is a "scent-free" facility, please refrain from using scented products (perfume, aftershave, etc.) in the Physiotherapy Department.
As our physiotherapy services are in demand, unfortunately there is a waiting list for outpatient assessments. Talk to your family physician or your healthcare practitioner to see what treatment options are available.
Remember, physiotherapy exists to help you feel better, move more and promote healthier living.
